AS into A2 Media Studies Summer Term Task

Your task

In a group or individually, plan, film and edit a short film or music video and reflect on that process on a blog.

Why you’re doing this

Next year, 50% of your grade will come from your production which will be a music promo package.

Briefs

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

• a website homepage for the band;

• a digipak for the album’s release;

• a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

By completing this mini film project you will learn how to use or practise with the cameras, transfer your footage to the editing system, edit it and produce it. You will also learn about timekeeping, planning and working as part of a team or as an individual. 

You should be in groups of no more than 2 or 3 to complete the task.  If you have your own equipment then you can obviously use this.

The requirements:

• Film should be only be about 1-2 minutes in length
• The task should be started with some brief research into similar music videos on Youtube, Channel 4 or BBC or Screenonline. 
• Your film must depict an emotion, concept or story: anger, frustration, joy, sadness, fear, anticipation or another agreed idea.
• It must be planned and storyboarded.
• It should use music – as performance or soundtrack.
• It should have some titles or captions
• It would be useful to have at least one spoken or sung element to allow lip synching
• It must include at least an extreme close up, a close up, a mid-shot, a long shot, a tracking shot, a range of angles, and also show different pace of camera movement, varied transitions and edits.
• Mise-en-scene must be organised, planned and appropriate.
• You should set up an accompanying blog to record ideas and include a weekly reflection on your progress.

You must attend and register in all timetabled lessons in E6 with Miss Bauman but during many of those lessons you will be able to work on the film in the school grounds, always making sure that you are mindful of other school activities. You should also get into the habit of working outside of lessons on the film; otherwise you won’t finish on time! Also remember you need to book the cameras, tripods, chargers etc. in advance from the library. You will need to allow time to edit in E6.

We hope this will give you the opportunity to experiment and acquire skills before you return to begin your coursework in September.  This is a chance to trial and test ideas without fear of making mistakes.  Have fun! Challenge yourselves! Be creative! Enjoy!
